As a romcom lover, I always roll my eyes when people say that “romcoms are back.” I’m guilty of getting excited every time a new mid-budget romance lands in cinemas too, and I’ve probably said it myself. But the truth is, they never left; we’ve just been looking in the wrong place.

While Hollywood keeps trying to recapture the magic of the romcoms that defined the ‘90s and 2000s, television has quietly become the genre’s best home. The most memorable romances of the past few years haven’t been confined to the big screen. They’ve been unfolding over episodes, giving characters room to build genuine chemistry, deliver sharp, funny dialogue, and make us completely obsessed with whether they’ll end up together.

If anything, the best romcoms we’ve had recently have been TV shows—more specifically, British. They just haven’t always been recognised as romcoms or given the same attention, which then results in heartbreaking cancellations.

So, I am here to give them the love they deserve, and though we all love Off Campus and Heated Rivalry, here are other series from the 2010s onwards that deserve your binge-watching attention.

Lovesick (2014–2018)

One of my favourite shows of all time, Lovesick follows Dylan, who discovered a sexually transmitted disease and must tell his former intimate partners. Even though his list is long enough for him to be a womaniser, the fact is that he’s just a bit of a lost romantic. Each episode is a flashback of one of those stories, while we also see his relationship with his friend Evie evolve.

This is probably one of the three shows I have ever rewatched—and writing this is seriously tempting me to go back to episode one. If you love witty British romcoms like Four Weddings and a Funeral, then you need to give it a go.

Crashing (2016)

Already recommended this for my 20 Movies & Shows to Watch If You’re a Girl Panicking About Your 30s list as an underrated gem, especially compared to Fleabag, which was aired in the same year and created by the same Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Though the main romantic tension comes from Lulu and Anthony, two best friends with repressed feelings for each other, the show shows a chaotic group of friends living in a disused hospital as property guardians.

The bad part is that we only have six episodes; the good part is that you can watch all in one sitting.

The End of the F***ing World (2017-2019)

This one is definitely a bit darker, but as a romcom-obsessed, it still hit the spot. Based on the graphic novel by Charles Forsman, The End of the F***ing World follows two misfit teenagers on a series of misadventures after they run away from home, who are also falling in love. On one side, we have James, who believes he is a psychopath, and on the other, it’s Alyssa, whose home life includes a terrible stepfather wanting her gone.

The show has two seasons and a conclusive ending, but I actually think it would still have been great with just season one.

Feel Good (2020–2021)

Might not sound as British, since it stars the Canadian stand-up comedian Mae Martin, but Feel Good was produced in the UK by Channel 4. Plus, filming happened in both Manchester and London. This is a semi-autobiographical story, where a fictionalised version of Mae is recovering from addiction and falling for George, a teacher who usually dates men and hasn’t come out to her conservative family.

Ironically, the show is one of the less “feel good” picks on the list, as it explores trauma, codependency and other heavy themes, but still has plenty of funny romcom moments.

Starstruck (2021–2023)

In this romcom, with a lot of com, Jessie hooks up after a New Year’s Eve party, just to find he is a big film star. This was my literal dream when I was single in London, but now I know what it would be like because Rose Matafeo—the show’s protagonist and creator—created something so real and dreamy at the same time. If anything, I wish I were this funny so I could have written it myself.

Expect three great seasons and, yes, a proper ending! It’s quite realistic for a romance, but still satisfying.

The Flatshare (2022)

The Flatshare is based on the sensational book of the same name by Beth O’Leary, where recently single Tiffany starts sharing a flat (and the actual bed) with the nurse Leon. It’s a weird setup for a romance if you’re concerned about hygiene, but one of my favourite parts is seeing them communicating via sticky notes around the flat.

I adore the book, so I recommend reading it before streaming it if you’re one of those people (like me) who don’t like to read after watching the adaptation. Sadly, it did end up being cancelled, but because it’s based on the book, it doesn’t feel like an abrupt ending at all.

Still Up (2023)

This Apple TV+ series stars Lovesick's Antonia Thomas and Craig Roberts, two best friends with insomnia who keep each other company with late-night calls. Unfortunately, it’s another case of cancellation after one season, which is a shame because it seems like not enough time people knew about it to give it a proper chance.

You can expect great British humour, as well as portrayals of loneliness, anxiety and a lot of confused romantic feelings. And don’t worry, you’ll still get a satisfying end, even if the story wasn’t meant to be completely over.

Film Club (2025)

I can’t tell you how gutted I was to hear this brilliant show wasn’t coming back for a second season. Film Club, written and starring Aimee Lou Wood, shows Evie back in her family's house after a mental breakdown. Dealing with agoraphobia, she focuses on her elaborate film club with her best friend Noa, whilst they both clearly carry unspoken feelings for each other.

It’s a realistic portrayal of mental health struggles, as Aimee draws from her own journey in being diagnosed with ADHD and autistic traits. However, it still feels lighthearted and full of romantic and cinematic magic.

In writing about the non-romantic things I find incredibly romantic, it also crossed my mind that a lot of the romcoms that were supposed to be romantic—and probably included all the tropes we’re meant to fall for—didn’t quite get there. The balance between the ‘rom’ and ‘com’ is an extremely difficult task, and if you miss on the ‘rom’, I’ll be the first one to notice.

There are several reasons for this: a lack of chemistry, an unconvincing plot, or a great idea that wasn’t executed well. Of course, it can also be completely personal, so take this with a grain of salt.

The Sweetest Thing (2002)

It’s rare when I dislike a romcom. Even the ones with low budget that people call ‘silly’ or ‘trashy’. But I couldn’t get into The Sweetest Thing when I watched it recently. It’s incredibly difficult to make a couple feel believable when they barely know each other (or haven’t even met in person, like in Sleepless in Seattle, which somehow pulls it off perfectly), so here, the romantic storyline felt flat and superficial. I must say, the friends are hilarious.

Meet the Fockers (2004)

I had to double-check the genre for this one, but as I suspected, Wikipedia says it’s a romantic comedy. A comedy? For sure—I recall crying with laughter. Romantic? Not really. In Meet the Parents (2000), Ben Stiller’s character meets his girlfriend’s father to ask for his blessing, not knowing he is a retired CIA agent. The following movie focuses on the collision between the two very different families, so even though it makes sense that it would have less romance, it did not go unnoticed. That said, I can’t wait for Focker-in Law with Ariana Grande to come out!

Sweethearts (2024)

I had high expectations for this one, since I’m a big fan of Kiernan Shipka, but unfortunately, I think using ‘romcom’ to describe this movie is false propaganda. The premise was very promising: two best friends who are also in the same university go home for Thanksgiving to break up with their respective high school sweethearts. It had everything for a heartfelt roadtrip romance, but ended up going nowhere.

My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)

This one made me come to the conclusion that, with the exception of The Holiday, many Cameron Diaz romcoms leave me unconvinced by the romance. With My Best Friend’s Wedding, you end up rooting for Julia Roberts’ character, a toxic best friend who only realises she wants to be with him after he gets engaged. You know she shouldn’t be trying to break them up, but you want it to work. There’s not a lot of romance in it, but you can see I enjoyed it, because I keep mentioning it!

Bride Wars (2009)

I actually love this movie, but it makes the list because for a romcom, there isn’t much romance. The story follows two best friends who dream of the Plaza Hotel as their wedding venue, but they become rivals after booking the exact same date. It’s a great exploration of competitiveness in female friendship, and the fiancés are really just side characters. I’m not mad about that, but I had to include it.

Love Actually (2003)

Don’t come for me, because I’ll watch Love Actually during Christmas as much as the next person. However, it’s more due to the festive feel and nostalgia than the romance itself. We have a couple who fall in love without ever speaking the same language, a man who secretly loves (or more likely, just has a crush on) his best friend’s wife, and a big power imbalance between an MP and his secretary. I still adore it, but do I need to say more?

While writing about the childhood best friend I never had, I realised I’d been looking in the wrong place. My sisters had been filling that role all along. They argued with me and made me think I was found in the trash, but they also loved me unconditionally and made me feel seen. They’re still my favourite people in the world.

Maybe that’s why I have such a soft spot for sisters in fiction. They feel familiar, but they’re also aspirational. They remind me that sisterhood isn’t about getting along all the time; it’s about having that person’s back even if you also have to slap them in the face.

So, in honour of the girls who taught us that love stories don’t have to be romantic (or even outside your own home), here are the fictional sisters who made me wish I had a spare room in their family house.

Sally and Gillian, Practical Magic (1998)

I’m counting the days for Practical Magic 2, after watching the first movie just last year. Spooky films are not usually my thing, but it was love at first sight with the Owens. It’s the perfect portrayal of how being raised by the same people does not mean you’ll end up the same. Though they are completely different in personalities and in what they want for themselves, they share an unbreakable bond and loyalty. Fun fact: the movie is actually based on a book by Alice Hoffman.

Lilo and Nani, Lilo & Stitch (2002)

I know we all love Lilo and Stitch, with their unlikely friendship and eventually becoming one of the found family stories, but I might love Lilo and Nani even more. Like so many other older sisters, Nani has to become a parent by circumstance and not choice, and instead of giving us an unrealistic version easily digestible for kids, we see a realistic one. While Nani makes mistakes, she is trying her best; on the other hand, Lilo is just being a kid who doesn’t get how hard it is. It’s really a story of our lives.

Ramona and Beatrice, Ramona and Beezus (2010)

Though probably not the best-known fictional sisters, Ramona and Beezus are among my favourite duos. It’s most certainly one of the first to come to mind when I think about sisters on the screen and on the page—yes, it’s based on Beverly Cleary’s books! As a little sister, I know how much we can be a source of embarrassment, so besides seeing myself in Ramona, I love how they show resentment and love coexisting.

Jill and Izzy, Voicemails for Isabelle (2026)

The most recent discovery on this list, I watched Voicemails for Isabelle not expecting I would cry in the first five minutes. It’s mainly because Jill’s little sister, Izzy, has cystic fibrosis, making it harder for them to share moments they would otherwise have, like going to school together or drinking at a party. It also made me cry because it reminded me of how lucky I am to have my sisters. It gave a whole new meaning to the song Dancing On My Own.

The Bennet sisters, Pride and Prejudice (1813)

I first fell in love with the Bennet sisters in the 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. Then, I fell in love twice more with the 1995 version and the new The Other Bennet Sister (2026) BBC series. No matter which one you saw first—or if you actually only read the book—we need to give credit to Jane Austen's brilliant mind. Oh, how lucky we are to have so many versions of them! And there’s even a new one coming out this year (probably not the last either), with Emma Corrin as Elizabeth and Olivia Colman as Mrs Bennet.

Alex and Camryn, Twitches (2005)

Watching Alex and Camryn gives me the best mix of nostalgia and witchy—let’s say, they’re the nieces of Practical Magic and cousins of Hallie and Annie from Parent Trap, since they were also separated at birth. Coventry-born, the Twitches grew up on Earth but in very different houses and lifestyles. It teaches us that being sisters is more than just growing up together and sharing memories; it’s almost an automatic connection by nature

The March sisters, Little Women (2019)

I’ve only watched the 2019 movie, but I still had to include this group of sisters, who originated from Louisa May Alcott’s novel. It’s such a complex portrayal of sisterhood, where Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy clearly love each other deeply, but still feel jealousy, resentment, and rivalry. As one of three, I relate to how the relationships among different sisters are vastly different.

Jane and Roxy, New York Minute (2004)

This list wouldn’t be complete without one of my favourite sisters on and off the screen: Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen. There were so many options to pick from, but New York Minute is my favourite movie from their catalogue. That’s because we witness them bonding over a series of misadventures around New York, finally starting to appreciate their twin for what exactly makes them so different from themselves.

Lara Jean, Margot and Kitty, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018)

I was obsessed with this movie when it came out, and even though XO, Kitty is not as good (to me), I still had to watch it—all three seasons. I feel a sense of loyalty to these sisters as if they were my own. Maybe I connected with them because I’m also one of three women, or because their relationship is so incredibly supportive and uncomplicated. Especially in the movie, where Kitty’s intentions in mailing her sister’s letters were from a genuine good place.

Last week, I confessed that maybe I’m not that deep, and that’s okay. I also mentioned how superficiality is almost always associated with women. The same goes for books written for us (and usually by us). If the cover is pink or there’s smut involved, surely it can’t possibly be serious, intelligent, or emotionally complex in the way literary fiction is, right?

Very wrong, actually.

Some of the most emotionally devastating books I’ve read have been romance novels that look like beach reads (or even are named after it…). It’s stories about loneliness, identity, grief, intimacy, self-worth, and the terrifying vulnerability of being truly known by another person.

So whether you’re looking to cry and swoon simultaneously, or you’re ready to join the anti-performative club, here are ten romance books that seem shallow but are actually devastating.

Beach Read, Emily Henry

Since I’ve already nod to it, let’s start with Beach Read. I love this book, but I’ve never got the name—I know why it’s called it, but it sounds completely different from what it actually is. It’s raw and intelligent, openly talking about grief, difficult breakups, creative burnout, and depression. It shows how you can go through your own stuff while being vulnerable and letting someone in.

Seven Days in June, Tia Williams

Seven Days in June is a second-chance romance between an erotica author (and single mum) and a famous literary writer who reunite 15 years after a life-changing week filled with codependency and trauma. They have to deal with their hot chemistry, as well as some unresolved issues. It’s an exploration of chronic pain, motherhood, addiction, and the fear of being understood way too early by someone.

The No-Show, Beth O’Leary

It looks like a Valentine’s Day-themed novel, which it is, but it’s also a mystery with three different POVs. Each of the women we follow in The No-Show is dealing with their own issues, including abusive relationships, self-harm and mental health struggles, sexism at work and more. It’s made of a multi-layered plot that will blow your mind by the end.

No Matter What, Cara Bastone

You know it won’t be a light read when you find out that No Matter What starts with a married couple, Roz and Vin, trying to heal and rebuild their lives after a traumatic accident. Even though Vin has a new lease, when Roz signs up for figure-drawing, he is the one who offers to be her model. I always find second-chance romances to be more emotional, but this also tackles heavy themes like PTSD and grief.

Yours Truly, Abby Jimenez

Yours Truly is an Abby Jimenez favourite for a reason. Our main character is an ER doctor on the edge as she goes through a painful divorce and deals with her brother’s severe kidney failure. Plus, she might lose her promotion to a new doctor, who ends up being a kind, anxious man. While it’s heartwarming and funny, you can probably tell it includes some heavy topics too.

Dead Romantics, Ashley Poston

All of Ashley Poston’s books are deeply emotional—trust me, I’ve read all of them except for the newest one—, but Dead Romantics is a tender exploration of the different phases someone goes through after losing a parent, what it feels like to be the odd one out and navigate difficult family dynamics. Not to mention the betrayal of someone you trust and love.

Get a Life, Chloe Brown, Talia Hibbert

A grumpy/sunshine book with a bucket list has everything it needs to be a light romcom, but Get a Life, Chloe Brown is a lot more than that. The first in The Brown Sisters series, the novel features realistic characterisation and genuine emotional growth, alongside themes of trauma healing and authentic chronic illness representation.

Happy Place, Emily Henry

Of course, I had to add a second one from Emily Henry, our queen of deep romance books. If you go on it blind, Happy Place looks like holiday-core nostalgia. However, it’s actually about depression and emotional repression, as well as grieving who you used to be and letting go of the version of yourself.

Act Like It, Lucy Parker

First in the London Celebrities series, Act Like It explores the romance between West End theatre stars Richard Troy and castmate Elaine Graham. It’s perfect if you love going to the theatre, the fake-dating trope and real slow burn, but also realistic characters and emotional growth. If you want deep romance, Lucy Parker will deliver.

Love and Other Words, Christina Lauren

I don’t see many dual-timeline romance novels, but Love and Other Words is an amazing example of how well the trope can be done. Split between “then”, when the main characters experience their first love, and “now,” after they reunite as adults, the story feels especially perfect for fans of Every Summer After. Of course, if it’s on this list, you already know it’s emotional: expect grief, childhood trauma, and plenty of heartbreak.

It’s Pride Month, and I want to celebrate it with my own curation of heartwarming queer stories across film and literature. Watching and reading realistic struggles across the queer community is necessary, of course, but so is witnessing happy endings. They inspire us to embrace our true selves, but they also create empathy in a world that needs it more than ever.

I know you want to rewatch Heated Rivalry for the hundredth time, but some other great LGBTQ+ romances are waiting for you. So here are the movies and books you should pick this month (and beyond) for some hope and toe-curling.

Watch list

• But I’m a Cheerleader (1999) — A pink-infused conversion camp where Ru Paul is an “ex-gay” counsellor. Yes, it is as funny as it sounds. Sometimes, showing how absurd homophobia is just what we need to deal with it!

• The Half of It (2020) — I love a classic reimagined! This one is inspired by Cyrano de Bergerac, where Ellie writes love letters to Paul’s crush on his behalf, all while liking the same girl.

• Hoje Eu Quero Voltar Sozinho/The Way He Looks (2014) — Don’t be thrown off by the subtitles; this Brazilian movie brings some amazing representation not only for gay love stories but also for people with disabilities, with a visually-impaired protagonist.

• Red, White & Royal Blue (2023) — A US first son and a British prince who fall in love is what I didn’t know I needed until this movie. I love a famous-normal-person trope, but two high-profile people navigating the spotlight is just as good.

• Dating Amber (2020) — With the resurgence of the lavender marriage discourse, nothing better than a girl and a boy who date each other to escape bullying and others speculating their sexuality. Plus, it’s beautifully set in Ireland in the mid-90s.

• The Broken Hearts Club: A Romantic Comedy (2000) — A simple premise: showing the lives of a group of different young gay men in their late-20s living in West Hollywood and searching for love and happiness.

• Love, Simon (2018) — The list wouldn’t be complete without this sweet coming-of-age (and coming-out) love story based on a book of the same name. There’s also a spin-off show called Love, Victor, if you need more.

• Crush (2022) — Speaking of teen romance… This is the perfect portrayal of teenage love and how you can be infatuated with someone just to find out what love actually feels like.

• Saving Face (2004) — In this hidden gem and true warm hug, Wil hasn’t come out to her family yet, when her pregnant mum is forced to move in with her, putting a strain on Wil’s relationship with openly gay Vivian.

• A Nice Indian Boy (2024) — The most recent release on the list, the feature follows Naveen, an Indian-American doctor, and Jay, a white artist adopted by Indian parents, as they navigate the meet-the-family moment and cultural differences.

Reading list

• The Great Orchid Heist by Eleanor Vendrell — If you’re a plant parent and love the UK countryside, this is for you. Phil joins an orchid heist, without expecting to fall for the botanic garden’s grumpy gardener and her cute dog.

• Less by Andrew Sean Grier — Not traditionally romance, but it’s a heartwarming coming-of-age story where the main character is an almost 50-year-old novelist on a world book tour.

• Wild Things by Laura Kay — Feeling stuck, El plans to do one “wild thing” each month for a year, all while dealing with having feelings for her best friend and coworker, Ray.

• The Pairing by Casey McQuiston — Looking for a bi romance? Well, here you’ll find two exes who had a terrible breakup four years prior, accidentally booking the same wine tour and getting into a hookup competition.

• We Could Be So Good by Cat Sebastian — With an unlikely friendship between a newspaper tycoon’s son and a reporter in the 1950s, this will help you understand what it was like to be queer at that time, with the safety of an HEA.

• Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall — Perfect for fans of fake-dating, since it follows Luc, the celebrity son of rockstars, and his attempt to save his career by pretending to date the barrister Oliver.

• Outdrawn by Deanna Grey — A sapphire rivals-to-lovers where two comic artists, who have a history from their design school times, have to work together to relaunch ‘Queen Leisah’.

• One Night in Hartswood by Emma Denny — For anyone who loves stories of knights with a lot at stake. Set in 1360, Raff has to track down the man who has been politically arranged to marry his sister as he vanishes before the wedding.

• Here We Go Again by Alison Cochrun — Two small-town English teachers in their 30s (who are also former childhood best friends) end up on a road trip to fulfil their mentor’s dying wish. Both emotional and heartfelt!

• Ander & Santi Were Here by Jonny Garza Villa — In this necessary queer Lantix romance, a nonbinary Mexican American teen falls for an undocumented Mexican boy, who is also the new waiter at their family’s taqueria.

Pride Month may only last thirty days, but stories like these deserve a place on our shelves and watchlists all year round. Whether you pick up a book or press play on a film, I hope you find something here that makes you smile, swoon, and feel a little more hopeful.

Last week’s post was all about how being a side-character is not bad or worse than being a main-character. They’re both temporary and necessary in different ways. To build on my sidekick propaganda and help you channel your side character energy, I’ve listed all the shows and movies where they unknowingly stole the spotlight from their lead.

Allie in Off Campus (2026—)

Since Off Campus is what triggered this whole thing for me, it makes sense we start with it. I fell in love with Allie immediately. I also love Hannah, but I caught myself eagerly waiting for her scenes, relating to her being a big dreamer and her need for more adventure. She’s the type of girl who is absolutely gorgeous but somehow is still humble and kind to everyone else.

The friend group in Notting Hill (1999)

A lot of romcoms focus so much on the romance that it’s like they live in a vacuum with no other people in their lives. Notting Hill is one of those rare cases in which all of the side characters are amazing as the main couple. Spike is funny, Honey is endearing, Bernie is clueless, and so on. This movie wouldn’t be as iconic without them.

Fat Amy in Pitch Perfect (2012)

Pitch Perfect is another *perfect* example of supporting characters being the best part of a movie. I loved the acapella covers and the sweet romance between Beca and Jesse, but let’s be honest, the most memorable lines and scenes were delivered by Fat Amy. We are used to seeing the fat friend as only comic relief, but she is here to prove that they can be just as—if not more—interesting than the main characters.

Emily in The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

I hadn’t seen Devil Wears Prada in a long time when I went to the cinema to watch the sequel. The first thing that I remembered? How Emily had stolen the show with her ambition and hunger for success. She’s one of the few ‘mean girls’ I can root for. I’m not one to defend the girlboss culture, but I admire how hardworking she is.

Stiles in Teen Wolf (2011–2017)

Teen Wolf was one of my favourite series largely because of Stiles. Watching him, you could see how Dylan O’Brien was going to have an incredible career. He meant to be the funny one, but he was also vulnerable, kind and the most realistic character in that supernatural show. It’s not that I didn’t like Scott, but he wasn’t my protagonist.

George in My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)

It’s not that I don’t love our protagonist, Julianne. Even though she’s quite unlikable in her attempt to ruin her best friend’s wedding, I somehow still root for her. So yes, I do like her, but George is the real star of the movie. He’s not the ‘gay best friend’; he’s the most supportive, charming, and loyal best friend. He’s who I think of when I hear Olivia Rodrigo sing ‘every guy I like is gay’. Really, he deserved his own romcom.

Anya in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997–2003)

As a recent convert to the Buffy club, it took me a while to warm up to Anya. I thought she was rude and heartless at first, but by the end of Season 7, she was one of my favourite characters—which is why I think she deserved a much better ending. Fan fact: she was intended to be a guest appearance in a single episode, but she quickly became a core member of our vampire-slaying group.

Francesca in You, Me & Tuscany (2026)

I want to be clear that I love all the characters in this recent romcom, but Francesca, the Italian sister-in-law, is such a delight! Despite the jokes being repeated a few more times than I’d like, she still got belly laughs out of me every time she came on screen. One of the reasons I love movies with loud, chaotic Italian families.

Now, I’m no professional, and that was only my opinion, but I also believe romcoms can be a source of some great relationship advice. Under the funny jokes and unrealistic grand gestures, there are so many real-life lessons we sometimes take for granted that would help us nurture better connections with our partners.

Here are some of the best relationship advices I’ve learnt.

1. Love is in the ordinary moments

About Time (2013) is one of my favourite movies, and one of the reasons is the major lesson it teaches us. If you haven’t seen it, the plot revolves around Tim finding out he can travel back in time (as all the men in his family can). Without giving too much away, whilst he tries to “fix” things by going back in time, it’s really cherishing the present that leads to a happy life.

That also goes to love: it’s not the perfect “meet-cute” or the grandest gesture that makes a successful relationship, but the sum up of ordinary moments.

2. Ending a relationship doesn’t mean failure

When we go through a breakup, we often feel like we failed. We tried this relationship, but we couldn’t make it last forever, which is what we usually consider to be the definition of success. Someone Great (2019) teaches us exactly that. You can grieve the end whilst still cherishing the good moments. It’s not because it has reached its course that it didn’t work. It did until it didn’t.

A lot of breakups in romcoms involve cheating and obvious villains, but this movie is a great example that the right decision is not always black-and-white.

3. Long-term relationships take (a lot of) effort

I have never been married, but if I had to watch one romcom to get the advice I need, I’d choose Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011). Although I love Hannah and Jacob’s plot, is Emily and Cal’s relationship I root for the most. Having sparks with someone we don’t know is easy, but keeping that same spark alive after years? That’s the real challenge. Even if there’s endless love, it’s not enough without a lot of persistence and effort.

4. You need to learn how to be happy alone

That’s an easy one, because it’s in the name: How to Be Single (2016) is the perfect example of how, to be in a healthy relationship, we need to learn to be happy single and alone. It’s a lighthearted movie, but it shows we can become codependent even for the smallest things, like zipping a dress.

At the opposite side of the spectrum, we have the subplot of Meg and Ken. The couple gave us the funniest scenes and taught us that while it’s important to keep our independence, we can still be vulnerable and trust someone with our hearts.

5. Navigating cultural differences requires trust

In The Big Sick (2017), we watch Kumail and Emily navigate cultural differences after meeting at one of his stand-up shows. Inspired by the real relationship between Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, the film shows how Kumail keeps their relationship hidden from his traditional family, who continue introducing him to Pakistani women for arranged marriage.

What ultimately drives them apart isn’t the intercultural relationship itself, but the secrecy and dishonesty surrounding it. The lesson is that love across cultures requires not only trust, but also a genuine respect for each other’s traditions and heritage.

I love romcoms. I love star sign lists. Thus, I’m making a romcom, star sign list. If you’ve watched a 2000s chick flick and thought you were just like that character, then I’m here to tell you if you were right or not—with no sources besides vibes and my own knowledge of astrology.

We know the moon and the rising signs are just as important, so make sure to check them out as well. Of course, we don’t all share the same personality based on our birthdays, but as I wrote last week for Single POV, finding similarities and shared traits is a fun way to feel better about yourself! Plus, your romcom protagonist might prove to be a great source of fashion inspiration—or at least give you an idea of what to watch tonight.

There are other lists out there, but I’m confident in my choices. Hopefully, you’ll agree.

Aries = Kat Stratford from 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

Technically not from the 2000s (just one year though), but I couldn’t think of a better fit. She’s the Aries romcom lead: fearless, full of principles, and doesn’t hide her anger to please others. She could be a Scorpio, but she has too much fire in her to be a water sign. Other similar traits include being passionate, opinionated, and impulsive. I’m pretty sure she’s double fire—maybe a Leo rising?

Taurus = Toula Portokalos from My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)

Grounded, family-focused, loyal… Toula is very much a Taurus. It’s clear she values a stable relationship, but she will go against her family’s expectations to marry the man she loves, whilst remaining loyal. Fun fact: the character is based on the writer Nia Vardalos, who was born on 24 September, the same day as me. She’s a Taurus for sure, but I’m not mad about sharing a birthday with her.

Gemini = Andie Anderson from How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)

Of course, our Gemini had to be a magazine journalist! Besides being very communicative, like all air signs, Andie is smart, fearless, extroverted, and can clearly show different personalities. Often called two-faced, Geminis are misunderstood. They are just very observant and can adapt well to the circumstances around them. It’s their biggest flex.

Cancer = Jane Nichols from 27 Dresses (2008)

This one is a no-brainer. Jane’s job is literally to take care of someone else’s life, in addition to being a bridesmaid to other women in her spare time. She’s caring and giving, but she’s also a people-pleaser and a hopeless romantic—a classic Cancer. She might share traits with Pisces or Virgo, but it’s clear that Jane is a Cancer sun.

Leo = Ashley Albright from Just My Luck (2006)

Just like any other Leo, Ashley thinks the world revolves around her. And that’s no shade to Leos, they’re so charismatic and charming that we mere mortals can’t help but follow them. They seem to be naturally luckier, more confident, and have a better sense of fashion. It makes sense that this sign would go to a Lindsey Lohan character, because they all give off Leo energy.

Virgo = Lucy Kelson from Two Weeks Notice (2002)

Classic Virgo, Lucy is methodical and a workaholic. She’s also determined, intelligent and idealistic, making me confident she is a Libra moon. As a Libra myself, I thought I’d be a lawyer just like Lucy because I wanted to see social justice—I’m glad I didn’t go down that route, but I’d like to think we might have other things in common.

Libra = Elle Woods from Legally Blonde (2001)

Also a lawyer, but this time, a 100% a Libra—I don’t care if Elle is technically a Gemini. Like me, that could be her rising, sure, because both are air signs known for their social and communication skills. But, sorry, she’s a Libra! Her love for beauty, fashion and pink, her sense of justice, and her loyalty to her friends make her the embodiment of the Venus-ruled sign.

Scorpio = Sara Melas from Hitch (2005)

It can’t get more Scorpio than this investigative gossip columnist. Sara is mysterious and doesn’t easily trust or confide in others. Like any Scorpio you know, she’s not afraid of getting emotional, but only after you prove yourself and manage to lower her guard. If you’re like her, you hate games but love keeping secrets.

Sagittarius = Jenna Rink from 13 Going on 30 (2004)

Jenna is a hard one to read: she’s a dreamer like a Pisces, outgoing like a Leo, and talkative like a Gemini. Ultimately, at her core, she’s chasing a more exciting life. Adventurous? Isn’t scared of what the future holds? That’s a Sagittarius! She won’t fall easily, but once she’s in love with someone, there’s no going back—or better, there is going back just so you can make sure you stay together.

Capricorn = Kenya McQueen from Something New (2006)

Kenya must be a Capricorn. She’s ambitious, has impeccable professional etiquette, and doesn’t show emotion that much. Something New is a perfect watch if you’re a Capricorn and just want to have a good time. Although they get the bad rep of being too rigid, they’re probably the ones who have the most fun, after all tasks are done, of course.

Aquarius = Mia Thermopolis from The Princess Diaries (2001)

The last of the air signs. Mia is clearly an Aquarius for me. She’s quirky, doesn’t want to conform to beauty standards (she literally gets embarrassed after her makeover), and is an outsider. Although introspective, she’s also rebellious and brave to use her newfound power for positive change. She could have Cancer in her chart, but she’s an Aquarius at heart.

Pisces = Bridget Jones from Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)

I have never met a Pisces who doesn’t keep a diary. Bridget is also a big dreamer who just wants to be loved exactly how she is. She’s sometimes considered a Cancer, but I think she is a perfect example of a Pisces. Both signs are romantic and emotional, but only Pisces have the specific emotional chaos that we see in Bridget’s choices. Besides, her birthday is March 21, which makes her a Pisces-Aries cusp.

We all know that Heated Rivalry (2025), To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018), and Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001) are successful adaptations from existing books, but there are some other romcoms you might’ve loved that you didn’t know had a literary life before.

There’s a reason production companies look for books as source material for movies and TV shows. Besides having a fandom that is already invested in the story, they don’t need to come up with an original idea and spend lots of money to see if it works. And they have the numbers to justify it: from 2020 to 2024, book adaptations made 57% more in box office revenue than original productions among the top 50 grossing. In some cases, the adaptation gets more cloud than the book itself, and many of us end up never knowing what originated the plot.

For that reason, I wanted to spotlight some romcoms I loved, and only later (or recently, oops) found out about the original work.

About a Boy (1998)

Not one of Hugh Grant’s most popular romcoms, but one of the best. It involves an unlikely friendship between a playboy and a 12-year-old whose mum is depressed. While the boy helps him become more mature, the Londoner teaches him to be ‘cool’. It’s bleak and wholesome all at once. While the movie has taken some liberties, readers say it still remained faithful to the book.

Love at First Sight (2023)

One of the best recent romcoms, it’s all about faith and improbable odds in love. Both the film and the book centre on a 6-hour flight from New York to London, a lost phone number, and a search around London. There are a few changes in the movie, such as the inclusion of the narrator a slight increase in their ages, and some switches in family dynamics.

Love, Rosie (2014)

One of my favourite movies and one of the best friends-to-lovers romcoms out there. Both the movie and book follow two best friends who are perfect for each other, but are kept apart by life circumstances. The book was written fully through letters/emails and spans a longer period of time, with more complex relationships between them and other people before the happily-ever-after. Fun fact: it was called Where Rainbows End before the adaptation.

Legally Blonde (2001)

I’m embarrassed to say that only today I found out the iconic Elle Woods was a character in a book before she came to our screens. They differ quite a bit; in the book, she went to the University of Southern California and Stanford, but Harvard was the one that gave the ok to be mentioned (although the filming didn’t happen there). Besides, she’s supposed to be more superficial and less ambitious than in the movie. I’m not mad about those changes!

Love & Other Drugs (2010)

This one blew my mind, especially after finding the name of the book: Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman. That does not sound like a romcom at all, and it’s because it’s not. Jamie Reidy’s book is a cynical non-fiction memoir about pharmaceutical sales in the 90s. Although the movie is loosely inspired by it, it created the romance between Jamie and Maggie.

The Perfect Find (2023)

I don’t remember hearing much about The Perfect Find movie when it came out, but it’s surprising since it’s based on a novel of the same name by Tia William— and so many people are raving about her books. I’ve added both to my watch/read lists, but all I can say for now is that the novel is supposedly a slower-burn “frenemies-to-lovers”, whereas the movie is a faster romcom narrative.

The DUFF (2015)

I remember thinking the movie was funny and light, but apparently, the book is much darker. In addition to being more mature and not having any beauty makeover, the “enemies with benefits” relationship between Bianca and Wesley is more explicit in the book. In both, however, we see her dealing with her being the “Designated Ugly Fat Friend”.

In case you missed it, I recently overshared just how much I’m freaking out about turning 30 this September. One of my biggest fears is no longer seeing the phase I’m in reflected on screen. Let’s be honest, there’s already a lack of Latinx romances in mainstream media, and age only seems to narrow that even more.

Still, I want to celebrate the films and TV shows that do explore life in your 30s in a hopeful light. Love stories don’t end after the coming-of-age era, and we’re constantly finding ourselves. If you’re also freaking out about leaving your 20s behind and entering a new era, then this list is for you.

• 13 Going On 30 (2004) — I had to include this classic! It’s pure perfection. It was the first time I thought 30 could indeed be the year of success, because when I was eight, that seemed way too old.

• Palm Springs (2020) — One of the best romcoms of the decade has two 30-year-olds stuck in a time loop? Yes, please! They’re also at a wedding, and what’s more millennial than having countless weddings in a year?

• Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001) — Another absolute classic, of course. The fact that she was not fat at all and already had a good career just proves that we will never meet other people’s expectations, so we might as well be ourselves!

• Always Be My Maybe (2019) — If you need a romcom with two late-30s to mid-40s, then this one is for you. It’s what you need to remind yourself that love can find you at any age, maybe it’s even someone you already know.

• The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013) — It’s about a middle-aged man, and it still hit hard when I was in my early-twenties. Who knew I could see myself in someone so different? You’re never too old for an adventure.

• What’s Your Number? (2011) — I related so much to this one because, for a long time, I was terrified of people asking my body count. What’s more ridiculous is the fact that men are proud of theirs. Your thirties are not a deadline for finding your ‘forever’ love.

• Thelma & Louise (1991) — I know it’s a bit different from the rest of the list, but I have to mention it, because getting old is also about appreciating those ride-or-die (ha!) female friendships.

• Girls Trip (2017) — Speaking of, turning a work trip into a girls trip is my dream! The more I stop going out, the more going out becomes fun (when I actually do it). This comedy is the embodiment of that.

• Man Up (2015) — I’ll recommend this one anytime I have the chance. A 30-something single woman is mistaken for a divorcé's blind date, and she decides not to tell him the truth. Of course, a chaotic night unfolds.

• Brittany Runs a Marathon (2019) — As a 29-year-old woman training for a half-marathon, I think this severely underrated movie is for anyone who’s going through a quarter-life crisis and has taken up running. It’s to everyone, really.

TV list

• Sex & The City (1998–2004) — It has its problems, yes, but it was also groundbreaking to show single women in their 30s owning their sexuality and having successful careers. Watching it made me excited to leave my 20s behind.

• Starstuck (2021–2023) — Comedian Rose Matafeo created, wrote and starred in a show where she’s working two jobs and ends up having a one-night-stand with a movie star. She was 29 when it first aired, so perfect for me and you!

• Insecure (2016–2021) — Similar to the above, the show starts with Issa’s 29th birthday. After that, we see her navigating careers, relationships, and other life changes throughout her 30s in five seasons.

• The Bold Type (2017–2021) — One of my favourite series, even though they’re in their 20s, they live through situations I haven’t seen portrayed in as much in younger shows, like needing a mastectomy or deciding you’ll never want children. Plus, Jacqueline is a great source of inspiration!

• Harlem (2021–2025) — It’s like Sex & the City, but instead of Manhattan and all straight white women, we have a diverse group of women in Harlem. There are a lot of complex relationships and maturing along the way.

• New Girl (2011–2018) — I wish I could erase my memory just so I could watch this again for the first time. Maybe all we need to get over this fear is three guy friends also trying to figure their lives out (I have no guy besties).

• Love Life (2020–2021) — Another New York show, where the main character (a different one for each season) goes through different love stories until they find “the one.” It’s realistic, but it’s still hopeful.

• Crashing (2016) — Of course, Fleabag is an obvious one, but have you watched this underrated gem? Both shows aired in the same year, when the creator, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, was 31. Expect impeccable British humour from friends living as property guardians of a large, disused hospital.

• Dollface (2019–2022) — It always starts with the woman getting dumped, but don’t be fooled. Besides focusing on the importance of female friendship, it is super creative and visually appealing.

• Girls5eva (2021-2024) — The dream that didn’t work out in your 20s? Why can’t you still try in your 30s or 40s? Girls5eva has girlband energy with catchy songs and strong, hilarious protagonists.

Romcoms become iconic for many reasons—the tropes, the chemistry, the writing, the backdrops, and, among others, the actors. Actors who went on to different projects, played complex characters, and even won awards, but whose careers started with being in beloved romantic movies. As your romcom best friend, I’m starting a series as part of Flick & Lit: Rewinding Stars, where I rank the titles of said actors.

My ranking is based on several criteria, such as plot, rewatch value, cultural footprint, title, timelessness, and more. So let’s get into it!

9. Going The Distance (2010)

From someone who watches a lot of romantic films, Going the Distance is not all bad, but it’s forgettable. As a trope, long-distance is not really appealing because it’s not something we strive for in romantic relationships. If they had a more compelling plot or higher stakes, it could’ve been more remarkable.

8. Fever Pitch (2005)

This book-to-movie adaptation exists to remind us of young Jimmy Fallon, but I’m secretly glad that he’s a successful host and has moved on from romcoms. Fever Pitch’s plot is my biggest nightmare: dating a true sports fanatic. Again, not a terrible movie, but not as good or as rewatchable as others on the list.

7. Never Been Kissed (1999)

I am aware that there are some problematic aspects, like the teacher falling in love with someone he thought was a student. On the other hand, it gave us iconic 80s looks and the undercover trope that never disappoints. In the end, it’s wholesome with a good starting point and final scene that always has me biting my nails.

6. Blended (2014)

The most recent of the bunch, Blended was surprisingly funny. After seeing her playing a few lost single women in their 20s, it was refreshing to still see her in a romcom as a single mum. It was also nice to see her with Adam Sandler once again, as they have such good chemistry together. Not one that I’d rewatch repeatedly, but it was a really good time.

5. Music and Lyrics (2007)

The celebrity vs normal person storyline needs to be executed well, and this one does it. PoP! Goes My Heart is a banger, and you could really see it being part of the 90s pop songs chart. Besides the great soundtrack, it’s like a crossover between Hugh Grant’s and Drew’s cinematic universes—something we didn’t know we needed.

4. He’s Just Not That Into You (2009)

I wasn’t sure if I was going to include this one, as it has multiple storylines, but it’s still part of her romcom portfolio. I rewatched this recently on a flight, and even though it’s nostalgic for the noughties, the dating advice still makes sense almost 13 years later—that’s why it’s number four. The character is a classic Drew role and very relatable.

3. The Wedding Singer (1998)

I wish I had known about this one sooner. I randomly saw it on Prime, and I was glad I did! I don’t know why it’s an underrated movie, because it has a great soundtrack, it’s funny, charming, heartwarming… Everything a good romcom needs—plus the best combo: a curly mullet and a bob. They knew they were onto something because that was the start of Drew and Adam as a popular romance duo.

2. Ever After (1998)

It’s obvious now that 1998 was a good year for Drew, because Ever After is one of her best movies ever. It’s a retelling of Cinderella that feels authentic and real. We see her not as a princess but as a heroine who fights and challenges the Prince’s privilege, which is what we need to see in times like now. Bonus points for having Leonardo da Vinci there.

1. 50 First Dates (2004)

Ever After is my favourite of the bunch, but 50 First Dates is the ultimate winner here. It’s her most iconic romcom—it has an original plot, real chemistry (as we had seen in The Wedding Singer), a lesson about love that goes beyond memory loss, and it left a huge cultural footprint on us millennials. In Portuguese, it was called Like The First Time, and I think it is the superior title.

In 2025, I wrote a book inspired by my own experience of thinking I manifested my boyfriend.

I am probably just delusional, yes, but I choose to believe in a world where believing in magic is like believing in god or astrology. We don’t need proof, just faith. If I read that a girl has the power to control the weather, I accept it. The same way people accept fate, signs from the universe, or the idea that some things are meant to be.

And maybe that’s exactly why magical realism works so well in romance.

A house that can take you back in time? Getting a note with the expiration date of relationships? Being able to talk to ghosts? Yes, yes, and yes!

We know romance books can be a form of life escapism, but there’s a sub-genre on the rise that helps us escape reality itself: magical realism. I don’t mean fantasy, where there is world-building and new rules to learn. Magical realism still operates in the contemporary sphere, but just with a few magical sprinkles on top.

It’s compelling because, whilst fantasy is a made-up place, magical realism is close enough to the mundane to offer a getaway much closer to home. It’s more than a slice of life; it’s food to your inner child who believed in Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny.

What is so attractive to us is how seamlessly it can blend into the life we’re so familiar with. Magical realism doesn’t ask us to learn a new universe. It simply asks us to believe that something slightly impossible might happen in ours.

The genre isn’t exclusive to romance. Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude is a classic example that helped cement it as a literary genre. Rooted in folklore and myth, Latin America was the perfect birthplace for it. Disney’s Encanto is another incredible example of that on-screen.

Now we’re seeing magical realism pop up more and more in romance novels.

It follows the boom in romantasy, and we’re already seeing other genre mashups emerging, like horrormance. So is magical realism following the same trend? Or could it be the solution to an oversaturated contemporary romance market? For readers who are used to the same tropes, a small magical twist might be exactly what keeps things surprising.

Where to start

Here’s a selection to get you started with magical realism romance:

• The Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston — My favourite of Poston’s books, it features a magical apartment that takes you back or forward seven years in time. Who doesn’t want a love story in two different timelines?

• The Love of My Afterlife by Kirsty Greenwood — A woman is offered a second chance in life, but to have it, she must find the man she met in the afterlife’s processing centre.

• This Spells Love by Kate Robb — Heartbroken, Gemma casts a spell to erase her ex from her past, but when it does work, she finds herself in an alternative, unrecognisable reality.

• Lightning in Her Hands by Raquel Vasquez Gilliland — In the second book of the Wild Magic trilogy, Teal Flores needs to control her power to change the weather—and also find a date to her ex’s wedding.

• Time Loops & Meet Cutes by Jackie Lau — When a workholic eats magic dumplings, she finds herself living the same Friday over and over again, while also constantly bumping into a bar owner. Very Groundhog Day-coded.

• The Magic of Lemon Drop Pie by Rachel Linden — After her great-aunt gifts her three magical lemon drops, Lolly gets the chance to live three alternative timelines and see what the “what ifs” would be.

• Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston — I had to include my second favourite book from Poston! Imagine being a ghostwriter who can speak to ghosts… and then falling in love with one.

• End of Story by Kylie Scott — In her new inherited house, Susie finds a divorce certificate hidden from ten years in the future. The names: hers and her ex-boyfriend’s best friend, who is also doing the renovations.

• Expiration Dates by Rebecca Serle — A woman gets a note with the expiration date for all of her relationships, until a man arrives without a date and makes her question if he’s the one.

• A Love Song for Ricki Wilde by Tia Williams — Ricki Wilde, the odd one out in her wealthy Atlanta family, moves to Harlem in New York and falls for a mysterious musician. It promises to be steamy and magical!

I was today’s year old when I found out that 10 Things I Hate About You was an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. I then went down a rabbit hole to find all the sneaky Shakespearean romcoms, just because. It’s no secret that his work had a lot of romance, but it’s wild to me how talented these writers were to translate the texts into very enjoyable and wholesome modern movies.

1. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

Since I’ve already spoiled this one, let’s start with that. 10 Things I Hate About You is loosely based on The Taming of the Shrew, but swaps the misogyny for a charming male lead and a strong main character. The story centres around two sisters, Bianca and Kat, just like the play, but there’s no torturing—Patrick doesn’t “tame” her, he just manages to get through to her.

2. Rosaline (2022)

For the fans of My Lady Jane, Rosaline is an amazing retelling of Romeo & Juliet, told from Romeo’s ex-girlfriend's perspective. It’s a fresh twist on the story, where they poke fun at how quickly the couple became soulmates. When Rosaline ends up missing the ball where she was supposed to meet Romeo, he then meets her cousin, Juliet. She needs to deal with jealousy and a new suitor!

3. She’s the Man (2006)

Another recent discovery, although to be fair, I haven’t rewatched this one in a long time! Inspired by Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, She’s the Man follows the same core plot of a twin pretending to be her brother. The twist is being set in high school, and Amanda Bynes character's motive is to play on the boys’ football team. In both storylines, they fall in love with a Duke, though in the 2000s film, he’s not actually a duke.

4. John Tucker Must Die (2006)

I remember laughing out loud when watching John Tucker Must Die—little did I know it was loosely based on The Merry Wives of Windsor. In the original text, two wives of wealthy men find that Sir John Falstaff sent them identical love letters, whereas in the movie, John Tucker is caught dating three girls at the same time. However, in both works, the women work together to expose their respective Johns.

5. Warm Bodies (2013)

When I was falling in love with this story between a zombie and a girl, it did not cross my mind that it was Romeo & Juliet-inspired. It’s now obvious, considering his name is R, and hers is Julie. Thankfully, in Warm Bodies, we have more comedic relief and less tragedy, even though the movie is technically horror and post-apocalyptic. It’s really an underrated gem, especially if you are into spooky romcoms.

6. Anyone But You (2023)

The most recent on the list, Anyone But You is a modern adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing. I must say, I didn’t see many resemblances to the play, but now I can see that Shakespeare was the creator of the “enemies-to-lovers” and “fake dating” tropes. Like the source material, there’s a lot of witty banter and chemistry, which at the time fueled dating rumours and consequently helped the promotion.

7. Get Over It (2001)

Embarrassingly, A Midsummer Night’s Dream is the only Shakespearean work I’ve actually read, and, although I was very young, I had a blast! Inspired by the play, Get Over It also has a few changing love triangles, plus the high schoolers work on a musical version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. If you’re craving a 2000s feel-good with a Shakespeare twist, then that’s it.

8. Deliver Us from Eva (2003)

Another adaptation of The Taming of the Shrew, Deliver Us from Eva is an adult movie, in which the Kate of the story, here named Evangeline (Eva), has three sisters instead of one. Their significant others are the ones trying to get her into a relationship, hoping she’ll stop interfering. They hire a playboy to date her, but when the relationship is too good in comparison to theirs, they make a new plan to break them up.

9. Just One of the Guys (1985)

Just One of the Guys is an adaptation of Twelfth Night and also a teen movie—maybe it started the trend?! After losing a job at the school newspaper to two guys, Terri enrols on a new school as ‘Terry’, pretending to be a boy. It gets more complicated when she starts falling for a classmate while she gives him a life makeover.

Watching a romance movie, snuggled up with your other half—or with some popcorn and your bestie—is the perfect activity for a lot of us hopeless romantics. But, of course, not everyone is like us. While people can have a real aversion to love stories, not all of them are cheesy or predictable.

And with that in mind, I’ve picked the perfect recommendation for fans of all the other genres. Does your boyfriend only watch sci-fi? I’ve got you. Is your friend obsessed with fantasy at the moment? I have a pick for you, too. Are your parents craving a cosy murder-mystery? Yep, there’s a romantic one they probably didn’t know about.

I hope this list helps you sneak in some romance the next time you’re fighting over what to pick!

Adventure = Love and Monsters (2020)

Literally one of my current Letterbox top 4, Love and Monsters is a post-apocalyptic adventure and an epic search for love. It’s also about found family, different kinds of love, and facing your biggest fears. If you know someone who appreciates a true hero journey, then that’s the movie you should suggest next. I promise they won’t even complain about the quality of the visual effects.

Fantasy = My Lady Jane (2024)

Okay, this one is not a movie, but I couldn’t find a more perfect recommendation. From the first scene, I was hooked. Even though we won’t have a season two of My Lady Jane, any fantasy fan will appreciate this twist on the story of Lady Jane Grey in 6th-century England. It’s based on a novel in which the world is inhabited by Verity, normal humans, and Ethians, people who can take animal form.

Sci-fi = Palm Springs (2020)

Every sci-fi fan will enjoy this time loop movie. In Palm Springs, two strangers meet at a wedding in—wait for it—Palm Springs and end up living the same day over and over again. I don’t accept claims that this is underrated, as it has over 200k reviews on IMDb and an overall score of 7.4. It’s just that good, and that’s why any anti-romance person won’t have any valid arguments against it for your movie night.

Comedy = Eurovision Song Contest (2020)

I had no idea what Eurovision was when I pressed play on Netflix and, boy, I didn’t know the journey I was on for. Eurovision Song Contest is such a funny and endearing movie that you don’t need to be European or have ever watched the contest to laugh out loud and understand its humour. It’s not the American Pie type of humour, though; it’s just silly in the best way possible.

Horror = Bones and All (2022)

If you ever thought cannibalism can’t be romantic, you have never seen Bones and All. Another book adaptation, it has as much romance as it has gore, and it’s centred around a couple of cannibals who catch feelings for each other on a road trip. I don’t think I’d have watched it hadn’t I been obsessed with Timothée Chalamet at the time; however, if your friend loves horror, I think it’s worth it for the romance part.

Action = The Lost City (2022)

No, it’s not a master piece. Yes, it has lots of fun, action-packed scenes. The best part? The Lost City follows a romance novelist and her cover model, which just makes me think of Fabio Lanzoni and how many romance book covers he has starred in. It’s such a fun setup that it got me interested from the start. Trust me, it’s not as bad as it looks.

Thriller = Your Monster (2025)

Your Monster deserves more hype. It’s classified as horror, so it works for horror fans as well, but the more you get into the movie, the more you see the psychological thriller aspect of it (which is one of my favourite parts about it). It shows an actor who gets dumped by her boyfriend and, while she’s in her childhood home, she meets—and connects with—a monster.

Historical = Emma (2020)

Another 2020 gem! If someone you love is dying to watch a historical drama, you can’t go wrong with a great adaptation of a Jane Austen book. Emma is also perfect for Bridgerton fans, who are not necessarily romance enthusiasts. The main character, Emma Woodhouse, is a Regency-era Englishwoman who plays matchmaker, meddling in the lives of the people around her.

Mystery = The Lovebirds (2020)

Ok, we can see that 2020 was a great year for genre-blending romance movies! If murder-mystery is the request, then I have the perfect one: The Lovebirds. Cosy, funny, and full of surprises. A couple ends up involved in a bizarre murder, and they go through a lot to try to solve the case and clear their name. While trying to survive, they also need to salvage their relationship.

To no surprise, we have plenty of new and exciting romance books coming in 2026—and as a slow reader, I need to be selective about what I pick up. In 2025, I read 11 romance novels, the most I’ve ever read in a single year, and that only convinced me that I need more hours in a day to read even more swoon-worthy love stories.

Since I don’t have unlimited time, I’m sharing the anticipated releases I’m adding to my TBR as a way to organise it. Hopefully, this will also give you a few ideas for your own list.

Most Eligible, Isabelle Engel

Release date: 13 January

Most Eligible is a debut novel by Isabelle Engel that convinced me as soon as it said it was The Bachelor meets Funny You Should Ask. Reality TV show is the perfect backdrop for fake dating, so of course, it’s not only going to be juicy but also give us insights into what goes on behind the scenes in dating shows.

Love and Other Brain Experiments, Hannah Brohm

Release date: 3 February

I’m especially excited for this debut novel, as I’ve been following Hannah Brohm on TikTok since starting my own long-form writing journey. Love and Other Brain Experiments is a STEM romance, so perfect for fans of Ali Hazelwood, where two rivals have to fake date at a conference to save both of their careers.

And Now, Back to You, B.K. Borison

Release date: 24 February

The author of First-Time Caller, which is Sleepless in Seattle-inspired, is now coming with a novel that draws inspiration from another classic: When Harry Met Sally. In And Now, Back to You, two radio journalists who often have disastrous encounters have to work together to cover the snowstorm of the century. It’s perfect as a cosy read before Spring starts.

Our Perfect Storm, Carley Fortune

Release date: 5 February

After devouring Every Summer After and One Golden Summer, I realised how quickly I can go through words when they are written by Carley. That’s why I’m adding her upcoming Our Perfect Storm to my TBR. Another friends-to-lovers story, Frankie gets dumped by her fiancé on the weekend of her wedding. She and her best friend, who has been distant for the past year, decide to go on the planned honeymoon to Tofino together.

Harvest Season, Brynne Weaver

Release date: 9 June

Following Tourist Season, the Seasons of Carnage trilogy is welcoming a second dark romcom book. I haven’t tried dark romance yet, but the Goodreads reviews are convincing me to give it a go. In Harvest Season, readers go back to the quirky (and dangerous) town of Cape Carnage, where Harper and Nolan will discover more secrets.

The Someday Garden, Ashley Poston

Release date: 16 June

I still think about Dead Romantics and Seven Year Slip on a regular basis, so of course, Ashley Poston’s new release The Someday Garden is a no-brainer. The story follows Sophie Drear, who goes to coastal Maine for a summer job restoring the gardens of Lilymoor House. She expected peace, but found herself being wrapped in the charm of the owner’s charming nephew.

The Missed Connection, Tia Williams

Release date: 16 June

Seven Days in June has been on my TBR for so long, and I have already added The Missed Connection to the list. After Sasha connects with an Italian on a flight to Paris, she ends up setting off a global office-wide mission to find the man on “Seat F”. Of course, a cute detective complicates the search (and her life) even more.

The MASH Up, Laura Marie Meyers

Release date: 7 July

I’m absolutely in love with this cover. I love that it doesn’t have an illustrated couple like many other romance books have done recently, but still shows the fun aspect of it. After a breakup, Ruby wishes to be inside a M.A.S.H. game from seventh grade—and she didn’t expect that winning the heart of Penn, her brother’s annoying best friend, would be the endgame.

Yes, Chef, Grace Reilly

Release date: 21 July

After falling in love with Iwan in Sever Year Slip, I’ve been yearning for another charming chef as the MMC. Jack teams up with influencer Poppy, the daughter of his ex-boss, to open a new restaurant and make it a success—she will prove herself to her family, and he’ll salvage his reputation.

We’re all obsessed with the adaptation of People We Meet On Vacation (2026). Even though there were things changed—and deleted—that made me miss the original material, it is undoubtedly a good romcom. We had the chemistry to swoon over, the bright and fun cinematography, that gorgeous scenery… and of course, the friends-to-lovers that was so beautifully done in book.

There’s something about that trope. How close it feels to everyone’s lives. I haven’t met anyone who didn’t, at one point or another, have a crush on a friend. Falling in love with your enemy or rival might never happen to you, but getting confused between friendship and sexual attraction is, well, not that uncommon.

I don’t often see friends-to-lovers being on people’s lists of favourite tropes, but finding romantic love and friendship in one person is like getting Willy Wonka’s golden ticket. And because we can all relate to the fear of losing someone so important to us, the characters’ need to hide their feelings is very relatable—even when you want to shake them and scream, ‘just tell them already!’

So if you left PWMOV yearning for more of the messiness between love and friendship, here are the movies to watch next.

Love, Rosie (2014)

This British romcom (yes, Love, Rosie is a romcom, so don’t try to fight me on this) is also based on a book. It follows Alex and Rosie, childhood friends whose lives go separate ways after high school, much different from their initial plan. It spans over several years, so you really see them grow up. It’s incredibly funny (but also sad so make sure you have tissues), with an amazing soundtrack.

When Harry Met Sally (1989)

If you did watch PWMOV, you probably noticed the similarities between its first scene and the meet cute in When Harry Met Sally. It’s not a surprise that Rob Reiner’s movie inspired Emily Henry, as from my rewatch during this past New Year’s Eve, I fell in love with the characters (and the story) all over again.

13 Going on 30 (2004)

13 Going on 30 is another classic for this trope and probably the most rewatchable of this list. Now that I am almost 30, I see this movie from a completely different perspective, because all those shiny things you think you need when you’re younger are far from being the most important in your life.

Brown Sugar (2002)

Brown Sugar is all about hip-hop, and I’m so here for it. Two best friends who have a passion for hip-hop (and also work in the industry) find that it might not be the only thing they love in common. Plus, it has Queen Latifah, and her character points out the truth: being in a relationship with your friend is getting the best of both worlds!

Yesterday (2019)

It’s refreshing to see a romcom following the male character’s perspective. In Yesterday, the whole world forgets The Beatles after he gets into an accident during a blackout. Of course, he claims their music and becomes a huge hit—while his close friend is secretly in love with him.

Sleeping With Other People (2015)

A meet cute at a sex addicts anonymous meeting doesn’t sound like it would fit a heartwarming romcom until you watch Sleeping With Other People. Lainey and Jake meet 12 years after losing their virginity together on a one-night-stand and decide to be friends. Honestly, this deserves more hype.

Plus One (2019)

I was today’s year old when I found out that Jack Quaid is Meg Ryan’s son. It made way more sense that he is in this great romcom, where two friends team up to be their plus ones at weddings. I personally love weddings, so I love even more when movies incorporate them in an unconventional way.

What If (2013)

Also known as The F Word, this one explores those situations where you might be falling in love from the moment you meet—but the other person is in a relationship, so you decide to be friends. It’s a very good portrayal because it does tap on that feeling of betrayal when you find that it wasn’t always platonic from the other side.

Friends With Benefits (2011)

This movie made me think too much of the song Closing Time. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing—or even if Justin Timberlake is a good actor—but you do have a great time watching Friends With Benefits. And, to be honest, I’ll never be mad at a flash mob.

As someone who grew up where summer was about 80% of the time, I tended to romanticise the chilly weather. I used to believe that people dressed better, that snow was fun, and that every encounter with the opposite sex was more romantic. Now that I live somewhere where 80% of the time is winter, I think it’s quite the opposite. I look worse with layers that don’t work (or match), rosacea flare-ups, and a constant runny nose. Plus, the rare snow gets dirty very quickly, and you can’t even hold hands because it’s too cold.

But there are a couple of things I still like about winter: cosy romcoms. They were the reason I had such an unrealistic view of this dreadful season, and now, they are exactly what I look for to get some of that back. From the safety of my blanket, stories of people who still look pretty and have an unrealistic amount of daylight help me get through it.

Here’s your guide on what to watch and read (that are not about Christmas) until May comes.

Watch list

• Chalet Girl (2011) — The snowy romcom and such an underrated movie. It has snowboarding, chalets, and Chuck Bass (it’s pretty much the same character).

• The Cutting Edge (1992) — This ‘90s gem is centred around an ex-hockey player and champion figure skater who partner up to win an Olympic gold.

• Groundhog Day (1993) — The ultimate winter romcom, where he lives the same day every day, after being trapped in a small town by a blizzard!

• Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) — It uses the weather beautifully to represent inner feelings, and it also has iconic hair/outfits!

• Love At First Sight (2023) — It’s a chance encounter, and you have a narrator that doesn’t take away from the story! It’s a bonus being set where I also live.

• Man Up (2015) — If your thing is movies that span over just one night, this other amazing London romcom should be on your list for this season.

• The Lake House (2006) — Cosy and mystical, it has Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves in a very Seven Year Slip time-travel relationship.

• Just Like Heaven (2005) — Winter and ghosts go hand in hand, so I had to include a romcom with one.

• Lars and the Real Girl (2007) — The film with the most unconventional love story: Ryan Gosling is in a relationship with a doll.

• About Time (2013) — My favourite romcom ever is perfect for every season, but I couldn’t help but mention it as it’s very cosy and includes some cold scenes.

Reading list

• A Novel Love Story by Ashley Poston — In 2025, I fell in love with Poston’s books, and even though it’s not explicitly winter, it’s very much the vibe.

• One Day in December by Josie Silver — It does have Christmas bits, but it’s not a focus, so it’s still great for keeping you cosy during the season.

• Normal People by Sally Rooney — There is not much season naming, but given the Irish weather, I imagine it with sweaters and rain.

• Single in the Snow by Helen Whitaker — When I saw that they used Chalet Girl as a comp, I ran to add this to my TBR for this year!

• First-Time Caller by B.K. Borison — It’s a Sleepless in Seattle-inspired romance, so you know it’s perfect for winter.

• Below Zero by Ali Hazelwood — The queen of STEM romances has an Arctic-based book with a lot of hot scenes; it will definitely keep you warm.

• Meet Me Under the Northern Lights by Mandy Baggot — Seeing the aurora borealis in full form is a winter dream of mine, but, for now, I’ll be imagining it with the help of this Iceland romance (one of my favourite countries, actually).

• Consider Me by Becka Mack — The first of her Playing for Keeps series, the novel is one for you if you love ice hockey and sports romance.

• The Lodge by Kayla Olson — Staying at a Vermont lodge but getting distracted by a charming ski instructor next door? That’s the winter dream.

• The Tourist Attraction by Sarah Morgenthaler — An Alaskan romance with a grumpy/sunshine trope, where one is the local and the other is the tourist.

Winter may have ruined my illusions, but it hasn’t taken away my favourite way to survive it. As you can see, this is more than enough to keep us busy for months, so until spring shows up and I can feel my fingers again, I’ll be here—under a blanket and pretending the cold is charming after all.

Everyone has that one Christmas movie they’re loyal to—even if it hasn’t aged well or others might hate it. I think that says a lot about who you are. So much so, that I’m convinced I can give you an amazing book recommendation based solely on that.

The Holiday = The Switch, Beth O’Leary

If you rewatch The Holiday every Christmas, then you should add The Switch by Beth O’Leary to your TBR for next year. This novel follows a granddaughter and her grandmother who decide to swap houses for two months—one goes to London, and the other to the Yorkshire countryside. It’s different because they’re family members, but it’s cosy and full of self-discovery, just like the Christmas classic. Both stories explore relationships, self-discovery, and the (dis)comfort of stepping into someone else’s life.

Elf = Seven Year Slip, Ashley Poston

Both Elf and Seven Year Slip have New York and a magical realism element in common. But I chose it because the main character is quirky, fun, and sweet! One of my favourite reads from 2025, the novel explores two roommates who are actually living seven years apart. A lot of the story takes place during summertime, which makes it perfect to escape the colder months.

Love Actually = It Had to Be You, Georgia Clark

One of the best parts of Love Actually—and something other movies have tried to replicate but never quite got it right—is the series of intertwined stories that come together at the end. It Had to Be You works the same way, only swapping London for New York, where a wedding planner navigates a series of linked love stories in the big city.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas = A Man Called Ove, Fredrik Backman

The only non-romance on the list, but still heartwarming! Fredrik Backman’s debut novel, A Man Called Ove, follows a very grumpy man whom the neighbours hate, whose life is forever changed by the arrival of a young family next door. Sound familiar? The book has even been adapted into the movie A Man Called Otto, giving you extra content if you love it.

Serendipity = The Lost Ticket, Freya Sampson

The Lost Ticket shares the same missed-connection plot as Serendipity. Freya Sampson’s novel tells the story of an elderly man who takes the same bus every day in the hope of finding the woman he met years ago. Since I swapped the cities for the Love Actually recommendation, this one gives us London instead of New York. Along the way, the novel explores unexpected friendships and gentle romance. While the plot isn’t identical, the tone and emotional resonance make it a perfect spiritual match.

No matter which Christmas movie warms your heart each year, there’s always a book that can capture that same magic. I hope at least one of these recs gets added to your 2026 reading list for a festive cheer all-year-round (without the mistletoes).

My favourite part of Christmas isn’t the gifts, the music, the food, or even spending time with my family (though I do love them). My favourite part is watching festive films. They’re wonderfully delusional, and unlike normal movies, no one expects them to make sense. In fact, the more unrealistic they are, the better. It’s the one time of year when reason steps aside and anything can happen.

However, there’s one thing that it’s like real life: not everyone is actually nice. Particularly, the men. Here is my list of which category—naughty or nice—some of the classic festive romcom men fall into.

Every man in Love Actually (2003)

Listen, I love watching Love Actually, but this comes to no one’s surprise. The men in this film are so problematic. One goes after his best friend’s new wife, the other gets into a very significant power imbalance relationship after calling her fat. Not to mention a cheater and one who falls in love with someone without even being able to speak the same language—not even the basic level. They should not be getting gifts.

Everett and Ben from The Family Stone (2005)

I love some chaos in a festive movie, but The Family Stone goes a bit too far. I couldn’t possibly put on the nice list the guy who fell for his brother’s girlfriend, and the one who fell for his girlfriend’s sister. If you haven’t watched and you got confused, it’s because it actually doesn’t make sense.

Chris and Dusty from Just Friends (2005)

I guess 2025 wasn’t a good year for the nice list. Just Friends, if watched today, comes with a lot of problematic jokes and tropes. But if I’m being completely honest it’s not just because the film didn’t age well, I just have a beef with Ryan Reynolds, so I automatically think his characters are not nice—by proximity, Chris Klein’s Dusty is also entering the naughty list. Sorry.

Mark and Daniel from Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)

Along with The Holiday, Bridget Jones’s Diary is my favourite Christmas movie. It has everything I love in a romcom: British accent, a not-too-perfect female lead, and a nerd boyfriend. It’s obvious, but I have to put Mark on the nice list but why Daniel? He’s an asshole for sure but he’s the classic horrible person you actually like. He ends up charming his way into the list but Mark… he’s totally Santa-approved.

Graham and Miles from The Holiday (2006)

I love Graham from The Holiday, because he’s not perfect. He doesn’t tell Amanda right away that he’s a dad, which is not cool, but that’s what makes him a real person you could fall in love with. Miles is also a catch. Besides being talented, he’s funny and you just know he’s the type of boyfriend who is also your best friend.

Tom from Last Christmas (2019)

I was tempted to put him in the naughty list just because of how much Last Christmas made me cry. Even though I loved it, I can’t get myself to rewatch it. Still, Tom changed Kate’s life for the better, and that alone, he deserves a gift from Santa. You’ll have to watch it (if you haven’t yet) to understand it. It’s worth every tear.

If you’re anything like me, you need to first read the book before you watch the movie. If I watch it before, there’s no way back—it’s almost impossible for me to pick it up and read it. I’ve always been like that, so now, I don’t fight it. I just make sure my TBR is updated with the soon-to-be film or show.

As someone whose favourite genre is romance for both reading and watching, I thought it was my duty to bring you all the books being adapted that you don’t want to miss on. There are some A-list actors and beloved tropes in this mix, so my expectations are high for 2026.

People We Meet on Vacation, Emily Henry

I’ve read all of Emily Henry’s books and, even though People We Meet on Vacation (or You and Me on Vacation in the UK) is not my favourite one, it’s certainly worth reading. The movie is coming to Netflix on 9 January to everyone’s surprise, because—let’s be honest—it’s the least summery/holiday month of the year. Still, I’ll have my sunglasses ready to go! Join me if you’re a fan of the friends-to-lovers trope.

Every Summer After, Carley Fortune

Another friends-to-lovers, Every Summer After is fast paced and gripping—I finished it quicker than any other book this year. It’s dual timeline: one is during the characters’ teenage years, and the other, as adults. I definitely prefer the teen part, so I hope the series coming to Prime Video (with no confirmed release date yet) focuses more on that. Now I need them to announce that One Golden Summer is getting an adaptation too!

The Love Hypothesis, Ali Hazelwood

This one is at the top of my TBR, just waiting for me. I am embarrassed to say I have never read Ali Hazelwood’s books, because I know how hyped they are. I’ll be rectifying this by demolishing The Love Hypothesis before Lili Reinhart is on the big screen playing Olive Smith. I have to say, I think she’s great in other romance movies like Look Both Ways, so I can’t wait to watch this!

Deep Cuts, Holly Brickley

Deep Cuts is as if Normal People and High Fidelity had a baby. It’s more literality fiction, so not our usual romance/romcom. For me, it dragged a little in some parts, but the ending was still satisfying. Ok, I’m not being super convincing but… Saoirse Ronan. Austin Butler. Together. Done. Production is scheduled to start in January 2026, so take your time with this one.

You Deserve Each Other - Sarah Hogle

Now here’s a couple I did not expect to see on my screen: Penn Badgley and Meghann Fahy. Those two are set to be the main characters of Sarah Hogle’s You Deserve Each Other, which should be coming out as a movie next year. This lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers novel promises to be funny, and I think those two can 100% deliver.

The Love of My Afterlife, Kirsty Greenwood

I have heard good things about The Love of My Afterlife and just found out it’s being adapted into a movie *automatically adds to TBR* by Justin Baldoni’s Wayfarer Studios. I really hope there’s no drama attached to this one! It’s all about a woman who meets ‘the one’ in the afterlife waiting room. I can already image how good the photography/aesthetic will be.

Romantic Comedy, Curtis Sittenfeld

I’m not sure we’re ready to watch a COVID story, however, I did really enjoy reading Romantic Comedy in 2023. I am bias because I’m a sucker for the celebrity/normal person trope, but the insights into sketch shows like SNL were really cool and interesting. It was a Reese’s Book Club pick in April 2023, so no surprise that Hello Sunshine is one of the involved parties on this. The project was announced in 2024, and we’re still waiting on updates.

The Bodyguard, Katherine Center

Again, we have incredible actors signing up for romance movies based on books (and I’m here for it!). Netflix’s film based on Katherine Center’s The Bodyguard will have a Gilmore Gilrs and Gossip Girl crossover with Jared Padalecki and Leighton Meester as the leads. Filming starts this December, and it will have two differences: it will happen during the holidays and it will have a different name! I haven’t read it yet, but I know it has one of my favourite tropes: only one bed.

Off Campus series, Elle Kennedy

I never thought I’d be interested in reading a hockey novel (we don’t have those things in Brazil) but I’ll have to give the five-book Off Campus series a go before Prime Video turns it into a massive hit TV show. I’ve learnt my lesson with TSITP, because now I’m never going to read them.

It Happened One Summer, Tessa Bailey

I have been wanting to see more romcoms with Nina Dobrev every since Love Hard (I’ll be watching again this Christmas), and god heard my prayers. She’ll be in the adaptation of Tessa Bailey’s It Happened One Summer, alongside Tyler Hoechlin and Virginia Gardner. It’s one of those that maybe I wouldn’t have read it—but the fact that is turning into a movie makes me want to!

I could’ve made this whole list only with Emily Henry’s books, because apart from her newest one, Great Big Beautiful Life, all of her novels are being adapted. If you haven’t read them yet—what are you doing?
